In-Person Natural Dyeing Workshop

Claudia Gosse Natural Dyeing

If you’ve ever thought about natural dyeing and not quite known where to start, this relaxed but informative workshop will set you on your way.

Run by Claudia (top right), a natural dyer and retired teacher who has been dyeing yarns for Elka Textiles for several years, the workshop aims to deliver the learning within a relaxed and informal setting in Mere, Wiltshire.  Limited to small groups (4-6) to allow for individual support this six-hour, hands-on workshop runs from 10am – 4pm with a break for lunch.

The day starts with a brief introduction to the history of natural dyeing and a look at the two main groups of  natural fibre; plant fibre and animal fibre.  You’ll learn about the different types of plant dye, their colourfast qualities and how to select those best suited to your project.

The course follows through every stage of the natural dying process: wetting-out, scouring, mordanting, dyeing and modifying - all supported by written handouts that are yours to take home.

Each person will select a dye to create their own dye bath and the results of each dye bath will be shared among sample cards for everyone to take home.  The day ends with an introduction to shibori dyeing.

Whether you’re looking to switch to natural dyes for your craft-based enterprise, or you simply want to explore the wonderful world of natural colour, this one-day workshop will teach you all you need to know to start naturally dyeing your own fabrics and yarns.  A starter kit is available to purchase for those that want one.

So come and spend an inspiring day with like-minded individuals where you can share your own particular interest and expertise, learn something new and have some fun along the way!
