As the famous cave paintings discovered in France, Spain and elsewhere around the world show us, our ancestors were exploiting their natural environment to create representational art at least forty thousand years ago. Using mineral pigments and plant sap binders they have left us evidence of their sophisticated creative and technical skills of which Picasso is reported to have said, "We have learned nothing in twelve thousand years".

This practical, hands-on workshop will introduce you to both mineral and plant-based sources of colour and how to turn these into inks, water colour and oil paints. What is the difference between a dye and a pigment? How do you precipitate a dye bath to create a dye lake? Why do pH levels matter, what exactly is 'mulling' and how do you make your own binders? All these factors and more will be explored as we work our way through the supporting take-home booklet to create and experiment with the different mediums.

This workshop is not just for artists, but for all those who are fascinated by the range of colours to be found in the natural world around us.
